Elegant Plate: Three Centuries of Precious Metals in New York by Deborah Dependahl Waters,
Although precious metals have been part of the lives of New Yorkers since the city's founding, until now comparatively little has been written about them. These two volumes examine the precious metals trades and usage of precious metals artifacts since the third quarter of the 17th century, through the excellent collection at the Museum of the City of New York that contains more than 1400 objects of silver and other precious metals, including hollowware, flatware, and jewelry made, sold, or owned in New York. The history of these artifacts and their makers is told through essays and catalog entries, as well as in biographies of craftsmen, designers, and retail firms. Entries include photographs of the objects and their marks, with measurements, description, references, accession information, and history. The featured essays are "Taste, Trade, and Industry: Making and Marketing New York Silver", "Life as a Silversmith in New York City before 1750", and "Gratitude and Glory: Silver and Gold Presentation Pieces in New York City History".

Sheffield plate - Sheffield plate is a layered combination of silver and copper that was used for many years to produce larger silver goods such as serving trays and teapots.

Gelatin-silver process - The Gelatin-silver process is the photographic process used with currently available black and white films and printing papers. A suspension of silver salts in gelatin is coated onto acetate film or fiber-based or resin coated paper and allowed to dry (hence the term dry plate).

Photographic plate - Photographic plates were one of the earliest forms of photographic film, in which a light-sensitive emulsion of silver salts was applied to a glass plate. This form of photographic emulsion largely faded from the consumer market in the early years of the 20th century, as more convenient and less fragile films were introduced.

Río de la Plata - The Río de la Plata (from the Spanish: "River of Silver", also known by the English name River Plate (as in the Battle of the River Plate) or sometimes [La] Plata River), is the estuary formed by the combination of the Uruguay River and the Paraná River. It is a funnel-shaped indentation on the southeastern coastline of South America, extending 290 km (180 miles) from the rivers' confluence to the Atlantic Ocean.
